Scientists sent bacterial coated broccoli in space

Scientists have sent broccoli seeds of coating of good bacteria in space. The motive is that astronauts can grow vegetables themselves in the space station.

Washington [Pt.] Scientists have sent broccoli seeds of coating of good bacteria in space. The motive is that astronauts can grow their own vegetables at the International Space Station. If that happens then one day the dream of growing vegetables on the moon or on Mars will come true.

Six seeds of broccoli have been transmitted from the ATC signature specroft launched from the Welsh Islands this week. Three of these seeds are in their original form, while three others have been coated with good bacteria. Bacteria are of two types, which have been developed at the University of Washington. These bacteria can stay within the plant and can improve their growth.

These beneficial microbes, also known as endophites, are helpful in the better growth of a plant in extremely low gravitational environments. They are also effective in the environment where there is a lack of water or nutrients. Following this exercise, there are students of Christian High School in San Jose, California, whose purpose is to try to grow vegetables in the micro-gravity conditions of the space station.

Students want to take their efforts later on to this moon and Mars on this basis. This initiative consists of a total of 11 students. Researchers say that initial results on the ground were successful. The broccoli produced by this method grew rapidly and its size was also large. In the earlier research it has come out that with the help of natural microbes, the plant can face drought and other environmental problems in a better way.

These bacteria meet the shortcomings. The selection of special bacteria and broccoli was done, because during the experiment, they performed well in conditions like Mars. It is worth mentioning that there is only limited amount of nitrogen and phosphorus in Mars.
